- Leveraged Buyout
A leveraged buyout (LBO) is a financial transaction in which a company is purchased using a combination of equity and debt, such that the company's cash flow is the collateral used to secure and repay the borrowed money. The purpose of a leveraged buyout is to allow a company to make an acquisition without having to commit a large amount of capital up front. The debt portion of the transaction is typically financed by private equity firms or other financial institutions.
