The company's investments primarily include residential mortgage loans; commercial mortgage loans and other forms of commercial real estate financing; and securities collateralized by mortgage loans or other real estate-related debt. It qualifies as a real estate investment trust (REIT) for federal income tax purposes. As a REIT, the company is not subject to federal income tax, if it distributes at least 90% of its income generated from the investment portfolio as dividends to its stockholders. Redwood Trust, Inc. was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Mill Valley, California.
