Bar Harbor Bankshares operates as the holding company for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust that provides various banking products and services in Maine. It accepts various retail deposit products, such as checking accounts, interest bearing NOW accounts, money market accounts, savings accounts, club accounts, short-term and long-term certificates of deposit, health savings accounts, and individual retirement accounts; and commercial deposit accounts, including checking and tiered money market accounts. The company's loan portfolio comprises home mortgages, residential construction loans, home equity loans and lines of credit, credit cards, installment loans, and overdraft protection services; secured and unsecured installment loans for new or used automobiles, boats, recreational vehicles, mobile homes, and other personal needs; and business loans to individuals, partnerships, corporations, and other business entities for capital construction, real estate and equipment financing, working capital, real estate development, and other business purposes. It also provides customary products and services, such as safe deposit box rentals, wire transfers, check collection services, foreign currency exchange, money orders, and the United States savings bonds redemptions; life insurance, annuity, and retirement products, as well as financial planning services; retail brokerage services; electronic banking services; merchant credit card processing, night depository, and coin and currency handling services; and cash management and Internet banking services. In addition, the company offers trust and investment management services comprising custody, estate settlement, and fiduciary tax services, as well as employee benefit trust services to individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and municipalities. As of May 15, 2013, it had 15 branch office locations serving downeast, midcoast, and central Maine. The company was founded in 1887 and is headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine.
