A venous ulcer is a type of wound that occurs when the veins in the leg are unable to adequately return blood to the heart. This can cause the skin and tissue to become damaged and break down, leading to an open sore. Venous ulcers are most common on the lower leg, just above the ankle. They can be painful and slow to heal, and may require medical treatment.
