A variable annuity is a type of insurance product that provides a tax-deferred investment option for retirement savings. It is a contract between an investor and an insurance company, in which the investor makes a lump-sum payment or series of payments and, in return, the insurance company agrees to make periodic payments to the investor at a later date. The value of the payments is based on the performance of a portfolio of investments chosen by the investor.
