Duke Energy Corporation operates as an energy company in the United States and Latin America. The company operates in three segments: U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas, Commercial Power, and International Energy. The U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas segment generates, transmits, distributes, and sells electricity in various portions of North Carolina, Northern South Carolina, west central Florida, Northern Kentucky, and southwestern Ohio, as well as in central, north central, and Southern Indiana; and transports and sells natural gas in Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. This segment has a generation capacity of approximately 50,000 megawatts; supplies electric services to 7.2 million residential, general service, and industrial customers; provides regulated natural gas transmission and distribution services to 500,000 customers; and sells electricity to incorporated municipalities, electric cooperative utilities, and other load serving entities. It generates electricity through coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear fuel, and other fuels, as well as through hydroelectric sources. The Commercial Power segment owns, operates, and manages power plants, as well as engages in the wholesale marketing and procurement of electric power, fuel, and emission allowances related to plants. It is also involved in the retail of electricity to customers in southwest, west central, and Northern Ohio; and develops commercial transmission projects. This segment generates electricity primarily through coal, natural gas, and renewable energy sources. The International Energy segment operates and manages power generation facilities; and markets and sells electric power, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. This segment serves retail distributors, electric utilities, independent power producers, marketers, and industrial/commercial companies. Duke Energy Corporation was founded in 1916 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
