National HealthCare Corporation operates and manages long-term health care, retirement, and associated assisted living centers, as well as provides home health care programs. Its long-term health care centers offers inpatient skilled and intermediate nursing care, and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services; and assisted living centers provide personal care services and assistance with general activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, meal preparation, and medication management. The company's retirement centers offer residential units for the elderly, as well as various ancillary services for residents, including restaurants, activity rooms, and social areas. It also operates specialized care units in its healthcare centers, such as Alzheimer's disease care units, sub-acute nursing units, and various in-house pharmacies; and provides physical, speech, respiratory, and occupational therapy services for patients recovering from strokes, heart attacks, orthopedic conditions, neurological illnesses or other illnesses, and injuries or disabilities. In addition, the company offers home health care services; hospice services; and management, accounting, financial, and insurance services to third party owners of health care facilities. As of December 31, 2012, it operated or managed 75 long-term health care centers with approximately 9,460 beds; leased or owned or managed 17 assisted living centers with 653 units and 6 independent living centers with 485 retirement apartments; and operated 37 homecare programs, as well as provided 420,421 homecare patient visits to 16,290 patients. National HealthCare Corporation was founded in 1971 and is based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
