The company's Investment Information segment provides Morningstar Data, a set of investment data spanning various investment databases, including real-time pricing and commodity data; Morningstar Advisor Workstation, a Web-based investment planning system for independent financial advisors, as well as advisors affiliated with firms; Morningstar Direct, a Web-based institutional research platform; Morningstar.com, which includes memberships and Internet advertising sales; Integrated Web Tools, a set of online tools and components that help institutional clients build customized Websites or enhance existing sites; Principia, a CD-ROM-based software for independent financial advisors; and Morningstar Structured credit ratings and research on alternative funds, exchange-traded funds (ETF), closed-end funds, 529 plans, target-date funds, and stocks. It also offers financial communications materials, print and online publications, and investment indexes. This segment sells its advisor-related products directly to independent financial advisors and through enterprise licenses. Its Investment Management segment offers Investment Advisory, which focuses on investment monitoring, asset allocation, and portfolio construction for managed accounts made up of other investment vehicles; Retirement Solutions, including the Morningstar Retirement Manager and Advice by Ibbotson platforms; and Morningstar Managed Portfolios, a fee-based discretionary asset management service that includes a series of mutual fund, ETF, and stock portfolios. The company serves banks, brokerage firms, insurance companies, mutual fund companies, media outlets, retirement plan sponsors and providers, asset management firms, and investment management companies. Morningstar, Inc. was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
