Tay–Sachs Disease is a rare, inherited disorder that results in progressive destruction of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents the body from producing an enzyme called hexosaminidase A (Hex A). Without this enzyme, a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside builds up in the brain and nerve cells, leading to severe neurological problems. Symptoms of Tay–Sachs Disease usually appear in infancy and include developmental delays, seizures, vision and hearing loss, and muscle weakness. There is no cure for Tay–Sachs Disease, but early diagnosis and supportive care can help improve quality of life.
