Obeticholic acid (also known as OCA) is a bile acid derivative used to treat primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic liver disease. It works by binding to and activating the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), a nuclear receptor that helps regulate bile acid production and metabolism. Obeticholic acid is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of PBC in adults.
