Oil and gas are hydrocarbons—molecules made of hydrogen and carbon atoms—that exist in liquid or gaseous states. They are found in underground reservoirs, trapped between layers of rock, and can be extracted through drilling. Oil and gas are used to generate electricity, fuel transportation, and heat homes and businesses. They are also used to make plastics, fertilizers, and other products.
