Fred's, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, engages in the sale of general merchandise through its retail discount stores and full service pharmacies in the Southeastern United States. It offers household cleaning supplies, health and beauty aids, disposable diapers, pet foods, paper products, various food and beverage products, pharmaceuticals, tobacco products, and apparel and linens to low, middle, and fixed income families in small- to medium- sized towns. The company also sells general merchandise to franchised Fred's stores. As of February 2, 2013, it operated 691 company owned discount general merchandise stores, including 47 express stores; 21 franchised Fred's stores; and 346 full service pharmacies. Fred's, Inc. was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.
